Urban Glyphs

As a kid growing up in the midwest, my family used to drive south (going down home we called it) to visit my grandparents in Florida. Out on the highway, every 200 yards or so, we would encounter signs with a few words written on them that would eventually spell out a quote, ending with the phrase ‘Burma Shave,’ a popular shaving powder for men. We would all laugh hysterically, eagerly awaiting the next set of signs.

The quotes were often corny or cheesy, and my dad and I always shaved with soap and a straight razor. And while I can't remember what was said, I remember the closeness we felt sounding out the words together.

Today, the super highway is the Internet, and Urban Glyphs serve the same purpose as the signs along the road. And as we slow down to ponder the images and read the words together, we're all family.
